Bengaluru: The controversial White-topping project and the Rs 500 crore allocated to Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister under discretionary quota did not appear in the revised budget of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which was approved by the State Government recently.
The BJP-led government in Karnataka has, however, allocated a separate fund of Rs 250 crore to develop roads in and around Outer Ring Road which is home to hundreds of IT companies. When CM BS Yediyurappa was touring the City to oversee development works, members of Outer Ring Road Companies Association had petitioned the Chief Minister to improve infrastructure in the ORR region.
Revised BBMP Budget
More than 70% of the Rs 8,434 crore budget has been earmarked only on developing roads across the City. This is almost double than what the Congress-JD(S) government had sanctioned. The BBMP is yet to disclose it’s action plan on how the funds will be used and on which roads.
A whopping Rs 1,172 crore, allocated by the previous Congress-JD(S) coalition government towards white topping roads, has been dropped in the revised list. The project had run into controversy as the government was spending Rs 14 crore to develop each kilometre as against the Rs 1 crore needed for asphalting the same stretch of road.
The Government has also cut down allocation towards solid waste management from Rs 753 crore to Rs 584 crore as doubts were raised over the use of funds. An allocation of Rs 25 crore has been made towards procuring mechanical sweeping machines as paurakarmikas currently use brooms to sweep the road. Rs 3.5 crore is allocated to construct a dry waste collection centre in the City.
Chief Minister B.S Yediyurappa appears to have given importance to improving the condition of government hospitals and revamping government buildings as the revised BBMP budget allocates Rs 833 crore under this section, which is four times more than what was promised in the previous budget.
No allocation, however, has been made towards Indira Canteen project, which provides food for the poor at a subsidized rate.
