Bengaluru: About 30 children had a miraculous escape on Monday afternoon after a giant tree came down crashing on the moving school van. The incident took place on Gunjur road in Varthur.
The old tree fell right on the centre of school van, which belonged to the The International School Bangalore (TISB). Another vehicle, a tempo, was also damaged during the mishap. The driver was not inside the goods vehicle at the time of accident.
A photograph posted on Facebook by an eyewitness showed that both the vehicles took the maximum impact, while no one was hurt. The tempo was fully damaged, while the tree crashed on the top of the yellow bus and smashed the windscreen.
A large number of people rushed to the spot, while some locals came forward to help the children deboard the bus safely. People also helped the BBMP to cut the fallen tree and clear the road.
Bengaluru has seen several instances of trees either falling on people and killing lives or damaging vehicles. Although the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had started a tree census to identify old and diseased trees, the survey is heading nowhere.
Recently, a senior citizen died on the spot after a tree fell on him in Jayanagara. Elected representatives and citizens have been asking the civic body to prune old and weak trees but no such drive has taken place. Standing, walking and even riding below the tree has become a scary affair in Bengaluru as the City is home to a large number of trees that were planted several years ago.
