BBMP Plans Experiment for Paid Parking System on Kasturba Road

Bengaluru: One of the most congested travel zones in Bengaluru will become a lab for testing street parking regulations.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned to introduce paid parking system on an experimental basis at Kasturba Road, located in the heart of Bengaluru. On Friday, BBMP Mayor M Goutham Kumar, Commissioner BH Anil Kumar and the senior officers from the Bengaluru Traffic Police inspected the road, ahead of officially launching the smart parking project.

The project was first proposed in 2012 but no government was willing to take the risk due to public backlash.

After much delay, the project saw some progress in early 2019 with City-based Central Parking Services winning the Rs 31.56 crore contract to manage pay-and-park facility on 85 roads. The BBMP, however, did not award the work as the then Bengaluru Development Minister G Parameshwara showed no interest in the proposal.

With the new mayor taking charge of BBMP, the smart parking project may become a reality. The BBMP, sources said, plans to expand the project on 85 roads based on the feedback it receives from the experiment on Kasturba Road.

As per the agreement, the Central Parking Services is allowed to collect parking fee by the hour — ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 30 — for cars and two-wheelers. The company will pay Rs 31.56 crore to the BBMP each year for the next ten years.

85 roads
Officials said the 85 roads will have a parking space for 10,000 two-wheelers and 3,000 cars. While the civic body is not creating additional space for the parking of vehicles, the fee — which is currently being collected from the motorists unauthorised people — will henceforth go directly to BBMP’s exchequer.

The parking fee varies from one road to another as the 85 roads are divided into three categories based on the location and the demand for paying parking fees.

Under the premium category, there are 14 roads including MG Road, Cunningham Road, Commercial Street, Residency Road, Avenue road, Race Course Road, Kasturba Road, Vittal Mallya Road, Lalbagha Road etc. The charges for parking a car and a two-wheeler is Rs 30 and Rs 15 respectively.

There are 43 under the business category. Some of them are Millers Road, Dhanvanthri Road, Nrupathunga Road, Palace Road, Miller Tank Bund road, Ali Askar Road, St John’s Church Road, Kensington Road, Dispensary Road, Brunton Road, Lavelle Road, St Mark’s Road, Church Street, Hayes Road, Kamaraj Road, SP Road, Seshadri Road, Kalidas Marg road, Railway Parallel Road, Palace Road, Main Guard Cross road, Lady Curzon Road, Crescent Road, etc. The fee is fixed at Rs 20/hour for a car and Rs 10/hour for a two-wheeler.

The C Category consists of 25 roads. Some of them are: KV Temple Street, Sultanpet Road, Sankey road, BVK Iyengar road, Chickpet main road, Thimmaiah Road, Broadway road, Shivaji Road, Chick Bazaar Road, Balepet Main road, Cubbon pete road, Banappa Park road etc. The fee is fixed at Rs 15/hour for a car and Rs 5/hour for a two-wheeler.
